
Introduction
to Ningbo Xiaoshi High School
Established
in 1912, Ningbo Xiaoshi High School was once a renowned private school in
Zhejiang Province. It was transferred to public administration in 1956, and
renamed Ningbo No. 5 Middle School. Twice, in 1959 and 1978, the school was
listed as a Key Provincial School. In 1980, it reclaimed its original name, and
one year later was recognized as one of the First Key Schools in the province.
In 1995, Xiaoshi succeeded to the rank of a First-Class Key Provincial School.
Four years later alongside another school, it was selected as a Base for the
Creative Teaching of Science in Zhejiang Province. The following year, in 2000,
the National Ministry of Education granted it the award for a Modern
Experimental School of Educational Technology. Five consecutive times, in 2005,
2007, 2009, 2011,2013,2015 and 2017, Xiaoshi was voted one of the 100 Finest
Schools in China. In July of 2012, the Ministry of Education’s Teacher
Development Foundation accredited Xiaoshi as a Specialist School in China. In
April of 2014, Xiaoshi was honored as a Specialist Model School in Zhejiang
Province. In November of 2016,Xiaoshi High School launches a pilot aeronaval
program in Zhejiang Province.
Currently,
Xiaoshi hosts 42 classes of some 1577 students including IBDP program students.
Its outstanding faculty of 172 teachers is a source of great pride, as many of
them have won coveted titles from the national, provincial and municipal
governments.
True to
its name, Xiaoshi has long sought to continue pragmatically the traditions of
patriotism and science it has inherited. To this end, it has adhered to a
school of thought that advocates careful observance of guidelines as well as
respect for the students’ needs, thus laying the foundation for nurturing
talent. Furthermore, Xiaoshi continuously pursues comprehensive educational
standards, thereby fostering an ethos simultaneously unique and modern. The
school actively advocates a spirit of exploration and innovation that champions
pragmatic solutions. A high degree of excellence in Arts and Sciences,
Mathematics and Languages has long been familiar here.
Throughout
the past century, the school has nurtured more than 40,000 students, presently
living at home and abroad, who have made ongoing contributions to the nation’s
revitalization. From among them, Tu Youyou won the Lasker Award in 2011 and the
Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine in 2015. Nine alumni including Tong
Dizhou, were inducted into the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and an additional
six alumni, including Hu Si’de, into the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Dr. Tsung-Dao
Lee, who won the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics, praised Xiaoshi for having
graduated thousands of excellent students who have made great achievements in
their respective fields the world over.
Xiaoshi
has rigorously pressed for educational reforms, aiming at a diverse curriculum
and a high quality education. Seen as a cradle for students with leadership
skills, the school exemplifies the promotion of an individual’s all-around
development while offering a spiritual home for mutual development between
teachers and students. In this way, Xiaoshi remains responsive to the national
curriculum, adapting it to the needs of the school, while simultaneously
developing a broad range of elective courses. In this way, the school maintains
its mission of continuously improving the quality of its core education through
implementation of advanced teaching methods and classroom research. Xiaoshi
thus practices a student-based style of school management by teaching students
according to their aptitude.
Providing
fertile soil for student activities, Xiaoshi nurtures a score of clubs and
organizations that extensively shape student life. Among these, the school’s
Model United Nations enjoys preeminence. Last year, it even was one of the
clubs invited by the University of Chicago to attend the top United States MUN
conference. Also of note, however, are the school’s Hefeng Volunteer Group,
Literature, Astronomy and Drama Clubs, Arts Ensemble, Calligraphy and Painting
Club, as well as the History and Photography Clubs.
Xiaoshi
fosters an open-door policy that promotes international exchange and
cooperation. In recent years, Xiaoshi has enjoyed amiable relationships and
exchanges with Hopkins School, U.S.A.; Perth College, U.K.; Yishun Junior
College, Singapore; Nanyang Girls’ High, Singapore; Lycée Jeanne d’Arc, France;
PIUS XI High School, U.S.A.; University of California at Los Angeles, U.S.A.;
Woodhouse Grove School, U.K.; Nishiotsu High School, Japan; and Glendowie
College, New Zealand; the University of Auckland, New Zealand; Kaiser-Karls
Gymnasium, Germany, etc. Annually, a number of Xiaoshi graduates have been
accepted for undergraduate and graduate work at world-renowned universities,
including Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and Columbia in the United States, as well
as Cambridge and Oxford in England.
In
2012, approved by Educational Bureau, Xiaoshi started running International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program(IBDP) and got authorization from IBO in 2013.
