Love thy neighbor

Aims:

I. Knowledge: 1. Students learn a lot of useful words and phrases.

2. Students know about the bad and good side in the society.

II. Skill:       1. Students know how to help others in some situations.

2. Students are able to tell the good and bad people.

3. Students are able to tell the good and evil behaviors.

3. Students can practice their reading abilities, such as skimming and scanning.

III. Affect: Students know that we should be an altruist. That means we should love others, put others first and be ready to help others. If everyone do this, our world will be better and better.

 

Teaching steps:

I. Lead-in: Nice to meet you, everybody! I know you are students from class 5. Though we can meet each other every day. We have never talked with each other. Now this is the time. Anyway I hope we can have a good time in spite of the hot weather. Thank you for your coming.

          1. Do you know who I am and which class do I teach?

          2. How about the others in our classroom?

II. Pre-task:

Task 1. Next I’ll show some pictures of people in the world. Would you please guess who they are?

         If you know the answer, stand up at once and tell us the answer. This will be a group-competition.

   Task2. Of all these 8 people, we can divide them into 2 kinds according to what they have done.  

           GOOD PEOPLE       /       BAD PEOPLE

How do you feel when you see the kind people?

How do you feel when you see these evil people?

III. Task cycle:

  Good people will do good to us and bad people will do bad to us. With these kind and evil persons, we can see good and evil behaviors in the society. So let’s read the text, it gives us examples separately.

     1. First look at the new words from the text, read after me.

       attack       袭击             assailant    攻击者

whilst       同时             transfixed   麻木地

       stab wounds  刺伤              sale         贱卖,廉价销售

2. Authentic material:

Skim reading:  Does the story show us the good or bad behaviors in the society , or both?

Read as fast as you can. Who is the fastest at reading? Let’s see.

Scan reading:

1. Read the first paragraph :   What happened?  A murder

      How do you feel?  

Feel frightened, and worry about our life. What’s more, no one helped. They just watched and stood by. In your opinion, why they did nothing to help Kitty. In fact, it also happens around us, e.g: On a bus, when a thief steal something, nobody would say something and stop them

 2. But we can also find many beautiful things in our life 

Read the second paragraph:  

How much money did the man return?

   I think everyone is happy to see it.  What will you do?

3. Brainstorming:

 Discussion: The passage shows us good and bad side of our society. Besides these, are many other things. Have a group discussion:

IV. Post task:

1. Students work in four and do the task, the teacher can give them any help.

2. Students report it out.

3. We all want to live in a safe world. What can we do to avoid these bad things?

l         Educate people.

l         Do it yourself.

Have you done something good to others? 

Try to be an altruist.  Altruist: A person who often helps others and thinks of others first.

5. You are driving along a country road in the dead of night. A bedraggled(被雨淋湿的) person of unknown sex tries to flag you down.(招手搭车 )

c. You stop immediately and give whatever assistance(帮助) is needed.

20---25 points  You are an altruist. Keep it !

15---19 points  You are OK, but need to think of others more.

5----14 points  You are selfish. You should improve yourself and help others.

Most of us are altruists.  Keep it up!

Task 2  As an Altruist, What should we do?  Here are 5 situations.

1. Four students form a group.

2. Choose one of the situation and act it out.

3. the teacher can give them any help.

You see someone suspicious hanging around outside a neighbor’s door.

You see a teenager stealing some sweets from a shop. (And if it was a little old lady.)

You see a mother violently beating her screaming child.

You see someone of a different color skin being beaten up by four of your color skin.

You see some children teasing and taunting another child.

 

V. End

1. If everyone does this, our world will be better and better. So we should put others first and be ready to help others.

2. Homework: . Do a good deed for others, like your class or your school-------

. Go out and find the bad side of Ningbo, and then make an activity to “heal it”.

 

反思

 1. 由于整个备课过程和PPT的制作都是由本人用一个晚上的时间完成, 所以在课堂语言的

组织上略有不足, 可以更有条理和精彩些; 语音语调可以更优美些; 前后任务的衔接可以更自然, 顺畅些。

 2. PPT上所布置的任务和作业虽然已打出, 仍然应该读出, 且应作适当的解释,让学生在

明了任务的基础上去完成, 才能达到预期目的。

 

评课:

1. 课堂气氛活跃, 充分调动了学生的积极性, 学生能积极主动地投入课堂, 配合老师完成相关任务。

2. 前面的导入部分过长, 进入正文的时间过晚, 结果不能突出本堂课的中心。
