                                                           Care enough for the living

Teaching Aims:

1. Students can be encouraged to think more about their own behabiours and tell the whole class their opinions towards their own behaviours.

2. Students can tell the right behaviors from the wrong.

3. Students can practice their reading ability.

4. Students can perform according to their understanding of the different situations.

I. Warming-up

1. Self-introduction

Good afternoon, everybody. Thank you for coming here and joining us to care enough for the living.

Do you know me? Let me introduce myself. I’m the English teacher of Class 5 and 6. Perhaps you’ve already seen me or even known me a bit. I hope that we can co-operate  with each other well. First of all, let’s enjoy a piece of music.

2. The song Heal the World.

This is the song by Michael Jackson. ( You know him? )

Questions: What do you think of the song?

           How do you like it?

Michael Jackson created an ideal world for us. In his world, there’s now need to cry, there’s no hurt or sorrow(sadness). Only if we care enough for the living.

Do you want to live in such a perfect world?

Do you often care about others around you or just yourself?

If you care about other people and try to help them, you are an altruist. Otherwise, you’re selfish.

II. Survey: Are you an altruist? ( individual )

Students give different answers to the question Are you an altruist? before they do the survey. Is he/she honest/modest/boasting?

Here’s a short survey to testify whether you are an altruist or not.

Students finish the survey individually, then the question: Who is an altruist in our class? Put up your hands. ( Those students who haven’t put up your hands, please don’t feel guilty. You know, it’s impossible for everyone to be selfless. You should care for yourself. But when others need your help, if you can try to help them, you’re also a very good person.

III. Story One

Here’s a story happening in America. Listen carefully and try to complete the chart:

     Who

     Where in America

     What

new expressions: a garage sale: a sale of used clothes, furniture, etc. It is held in the garage of someone’s house.

Questions: Why did the man return the box?

Was he simply afraid that he might have been caught?

Will you do as he did?

IV. Tell right from wrong

Not everything around us is perfect. Look at the photos, what are they doing?

Which behaviours are good? Let’s check them.

write on the wall, throw the paper on the floor, fight, help the old man cross the road, give the seat to others,

volunteers picking up the rubbish, donate the money to Hope Schools

V. Story Two

Here’s another story in America. Try to complete the second chart:

          Who

          What time

          Where

          What

New words: attack, scream, escape, assailant, whilst, transfixed ( unable to move because they’re surprised or afraid ), multiple, stab

Question: Why did people do nothing to help Kitty? List some reasons as many as possible.

If you’re one of Kitty’s neighbors, what will you do?

VI. Performance (Group work )

What will you do in the following 5 situations?

VII. Homework: Write a passage: How can we care enough for others? You are welcome to email it to me.
